AMC 8 Practice Test Papers With Full Solutions

Most students preparing for the AMC 8 do the same thing: they read a topic, nod along, and move on. Then they sit a real paper and score fifteen. The gap is not knowledge. It is that they have never had to find the idea under time pressure, with four wrong answers sitting next to the right one. An AMC 8 practice test is the only tool that closes that gap, and it only works if you use it as a diagnostic rather than a scoreboard.

This guide explains how the paper is built, what the scoring rewards, and how to run a practice paper so it actually changes your score. It ends with papers you can sit online right now for free.

What the AMC 8 actually asks of you

The AMC 8 is 25 multiple-choice questions in 40 minutes, one mark each, with no penalty for a wrong answer. Two consequences follow, and almost every mark a student leaves behind traces back to one of them.

First, every question is worth exactly the same. Question 3 and question 24 both pay one mark, but question 24 might take eight minutes. A student who works strictly in order often spends the back half of the clock on two hard problems and never sees four easy ones at the end. The paper is not sorted purely by difficulty, and treating it as a queue is expensive.

Second, there is no negative marking. A blank scores zero and a wrong guess also scores zero, so leaving anything blank is strictly worse than guessing. On a five-option question a blind guess is worth 0.2 marks in expectation; eliminate two options and it is worth 0.33. Students still hand back papers with four blanks.

That is the whole strategic layer. It is small, it is arithmetic, and it is worth three to five marks to a student who has never thought about it.

Why a practice paper beats another topic chapter

Topic study builds the vocabulary. It does not build the two skills the exam actually tests: recognising which idea a problem wants, and choosing what to skip. Those are only trainable against mixed, timed papers.

There is a second reason, less obvious. When you study a chapter on counting, you already know the answer involves counting. The real paper gives you no such label. A student who scores well on a counting worksheet and badly on question 19 has not failed at counting - they have failed at recognising a counting problem in the wild. Only a mixed paper exposes that.

The useful sequence is: learn a topic, drill it topic-wise until the method is automatic, then fold it into full mocks so you practise recognising it cold. Our series is built in exactly that order.

How to sit a practice paper so it teaches you something

A paper you sit casually teaches you almost nothing. Four rules make the difference.

Time it honestly. 40 minutes, one sitting, no phone, no checking an answer halfway. If you stop the clock, you have measured your mathematics but not your exam.

Mark your confidence, not just your answer. Put a dot next to any question you were unsure of. When you mark the paper, a dotted question you got right is a warning, not a win - you will not be lucky twice.

Redo every wrong question before reading the solution. Untimed, with no hints. If you solve it in four quiet minutes, the problem was pace, not knowledge, and the fix is pacing practice. If you still cannot solve it, the problem is a genuine gap and the solution is worth reading properly.

Keep an error log with causes, not topics. "Geometry" is useless. "Misread which angle was asked for" is actionable. Most students find three or four causes repeat across every paper they sit, and fixing those is faster than learning anything new.

Each paper holds 30 questions in 48 minutes. That is deliberately more than the real 25 in 40 - it is exactly the same 1.6 minutes per question, with five extra questions of practice per sitting. You train at competition pace and get 20 per cent more reps.

A six-week plan using the papers

This assumes four to five hours a week and a student who knows the school syllabus but has not competed much.

Weeks 1 and 2 - baseline and number sense. Sit one full mock cold in week 1, before revising anything. That score is your honest starting point and it will be lower than you expect. Then work the three number theory papers and the first counting paper. Log every error by cause.

Weeks 3 and 4 - the expensive topics. Geometry and counting produce the most lost marks at this level, because both reward a diagram or a systematic list and punish guessing. Work all three geometry papers and the remaining counting papers. Redo, untimed, every question you missed.

Week 5 - algebra, word problems and logic. These are usually the fastest marks on the paper and the easiest to secure. Three algebra papers and the logic paper.

Week 6 - full mocks only. Sit three full mocks on separate days, strictly timed. By now you are not learning mathematics; you are learning to deploy it in 40 minutes. Compare your error log from week 6 with week 1 - if the same cause is still there, that is the one thing left to fix.

Free papers you can sit right now

Two of the twenty papers are open to everyone with no card and no trial - a topic-wise counting and probability paper and a full mock, so you can see both halves of the series before deciding anything.

Sit the free full mock first, cold, before you revise anything. A baseline you did not prepare for is the single most useful number in your preparation, and it costs you 48 minutes.

Where practice papers stop being enough

Papers diagnose. They do not teach. If your error log keeps returning the same cause after three papers - you cannot set up a counting problem, or you never see the auxiliary line - repetition will not fix it, because you are practising the gap rather than closing it.

That is the point at which a teacher is worth more than another paper. Questions people ask

How many practice tests should I sit before the real exam?

Six to eight full timed papers is enough for most students, spread over the last four to six weeks, plus topic-wise papers alongside your revision. More than that stops adding value, because the limiting factor becomes what you do with each paper afterwards rather than how many you sit. One paper properly reviewed - every wrong question redone untimed, every cause logged - is worth more than three papers you only marked.

Is there negative marking on the AMC 8?

No. A wrong answer and a blank both score zero, so you should never leave a question blank. With five options a blind guess is worth 0.2 marks on average, and if you can eliminate two obviously wrong options it rises to about 0.33. Over four unanswered questions that is a mark or more, which at this level is a meaningful difference.

Are these papers the same as the official past papers?

No, and deliberately so. These are original papers written to the same specification - the same topic mix, the same difficulty curve and the same pacing of 1.6 minutes per question. Official past papers are freely available from the MAA and you should use those too, but there are a limited number of them, and once you have seen a paper you can never sit it cold again. These give you 20 more papers to sit honestly.

Why do your papers have 30 questions instead of 25?

Each paper is 30 questions in 48 minutes, which is exactly the same 1.6 minutes per question as the real 25 in 40. You practise at genuine competition pace but get five extra questions of practice every time you sit down - about 20 per cent more reps across the series for the same pace discipline.

What score is considered good on this competition?

It varies by year, but broadly: above 15 puts a student comfortably above average, 18 to 20 is a strong score that often earns school or district recognition, and above 20 is genuinely excellent and competitive for Honor Roll distinctions. Rather than aiming at a number, use a cold baseline paper to find your starting point and measure improvement from there.
