Junior Maths Challenge Practice Papers and Solutions

Junior Maths Challenge practice papers with worked solutions and timed online marking

The Junior Mathematical Challenge is sat by hundreds of thousands of students across the UK, and most of them walk in having never seen a paper under time pressure. That is the whole opportunity. Working through Junior Maths Challenge practice papers at genuine pace is the difference between a Bronze certificate and a Gold, and it takes far less time than most parents expect.

This guide sets out how the paper is scored, what the follow-on rounds require, and how to use timed papers properly. Three of our twenty papers are free to sit online.

How the Junior Mathematical Challenge is scored

The JMC is 25 multiple-choice questions in 60 minutes, for students in Year 8 and below in England and Wales, S2 and below in Scotland, and Year 9 and below in Northern Ireland.

The marking is banded, and the bands matter:

  • Questions 1-15: 5 marks for a correct answer, and nothing deducted for a wrong one
  • Questions 16-25: 6 marks for a correct answer, and nothing deducted for a wrong one

Because the JMC carries no penalty anywhere on the paper, the strategy is unusually simple: answer every single question. A blank is worth zero and a guess is worth more than zero, so there is never a reason to leave anything empty. Students still routinely hand in papers with three or four blanks, and every one of those is a free expected mark thrown away.

The certificate thresholds move each year and are set by the UKMT after the papers are marked, with roughly the top 40 per cent of entrants receiving Bronze, Silver or Gold. The follow-on rounds - the Junior Kangaroo and the Junior Mathematical Olympiad - are invitation-only from the highest scorers.

The two skills the paper actually tests

The JMC is not a test of curriculum knowledge. A Year 8 student has already met almost every technique the paper uses. What the paper tests is recognition and pace.

Recognition is seeing that a problem about handshakes is really a counting problem, or that a question about a folded piece of paper is really about symmetry. School mathematics announces its topic; the JMC never does. This is precisely why practice papers work better than revision - each paper is 25 unlabelled problems.

Pace is the other half. Sixty minutes over 25 questions is 2.4 minutes each, but the last ten questions are harder and deserve more. A student who spends six minutes on question 9 has already lost the back of the paper. Only a clock teaches this.

Using a practice paper properly

Sit it in one hour, in one go. A paper broken into pieces measures nothing useful.

Answer everything. Even on a practice paper - especially on a practice paper - because you are building the habit you want in the hall. If the clock is nearly out, spend the final minute filling every empty box.

Circle the guesses. When you mark, treat a circled question you happened to get right as unlearned. Lucky answers hide gaps very effectively.

Redo misses untimed before reading solutions. This one habit separates students who improve from students who simply accumulate papers. If it comes out in four unhurried minutes, the issue was pace. If it does not, the issue is a genuine gap and the worked solution is now worth reading properly.

Each paper is 30 questions in 60 minutes and marked to the real banded scheme - 5 marks on the first 18, 6 on the last 12, no penalties - so a paper totals 162 marks. Sitting 30 questions in the hour is slightly brisker than the real 25, which builds a small margin of pace before the day.

A four-week plan

Four weeks at two to three hours a week is enough to move most students a certificate band, because so much of the gain is strategic rather than mathematical.

Week 1. Sit one full mock cold. Do not prepare. This is your baseline and it is the most informative hour of the whole plan. Then work two topic papers on whatever the mock exposed.

Week 2. Four topic papers, chosen by where the errors clustered. Redo every miss untimed. Start the error log with causes rather than topics.

Week 3. Two topic papers and two full mocks. Check that you are answering all 30 questions on every mock - if not, that is the fix, ahead of any mathematics.

Week 4. Two full mocks early in the week, then stop. Re-read the log. Confirm the habit of never leaving a blank has become automatic.

Three free papers

Three of the twenty are open with no card and no trial, which is enough to establish a baseline and check that your pacing holds across more than a single sitting:

If a student sits only one thing before the real challenge, make it a full timed paper with every box filled. That single rehearsal is worth more than an evening of revision.

Moving on to the Intermediate Challenge

Students who do well here move up to the Intermediate Mathematical Challenge, and the step is bigger than it looks - the IMC introduces genuine negative marking on its harder questions, which reverses the answer-everything habit the JMC rewards. The short version

No question on this paper carries a penalty, so every box should be filled - that alone recovers marks for most students. The challenge tests recognition and pace rather than syllabus knowledge, and both are trained only under a clock. Sit a full timed paper cold, log the causes of your errors, and work from what the evidence actually says.

Questions people ask

Is there negative marking on the Junior Mathematical Challenge?

No. Neither section of the JMC deducts marks for a wrong answer, so you should answer all 25 questions without exception. A blank scores zero while a guess has a one-in-five chance of scoring five or six marks, which makes filling every box strictly better. If time is running out, spend the last minute putting something in every empty answer.

Who can enter the Junior Mathematical Challenge?

It is open to students in Year 8 and below in England and Wales, S2 and below in Scotland, and Year 9 and below in Northern Ireland. Entry is normally arranged through your school rather than individually. The highest scorers are invited to follow-on rounds, the Junior Kangaroo and the Junior Mathematical Olympiad.

What score is needed for a Gold certificate?

The thresholds are not fixed in advance - the UKMT sets them each year after the papers are marked, so they move with the difficulty of that particular paper. Broadly, certificates go to around the top 40 per cent of entrants, split between Bronze, Silver and Gold. Rather than chasing a number, use a cold timed paper to find your baseline and measure improvement from it.

How are these different from official UKMT past papers?

These are original papers written to the same specification rather than reprints of past challenges. They match the format, the banded marking and the difficulty curve, and each carries a full worked solution. Official past papers are worth using as well, but there is a limited supply and each can only be sat cold once - this series adds 20 more you have never seen.

How long should a student prepare for?

Four weeks at two to three hours a week is enough to move most students a certificate band, because much of the improvement is strategic rather than mathematical - filling every box, pacing across 25 questions, and recognising problem types quickly. Students aiming at the follow-on rounds benefit from a longer run at it, typically eight to twelve weeks.
