AMC 8 Preparation Course 2027: Live Classes and Mock Tests

The AMC 8 in one paragraph

The AMC 8 is a 25-question, 40-minute multiple-choice competition for students in Grade 8 and below, run by the Mathematical Association of America. There is no penalty for a wrong answer, which means every question should be answered. The 2027 contest runs in a window from 21 to 27 January 2027, with registration closing on 5 January and late registration on 14 January. It is not a school test with a syllabus to revise — it rewards a student who can read a problem carefully and find a short route to the answer.

What the AMC 8 actually tests

The mathematics itself rarely goes beyond what a strong Grade 7 student has met. What makes the paper hard is the reading and the pacing: 40 minutes for 25 questions is 96 seconds each, and the last five questions take far longer than that, so the first fifteen have to be secured quickly and accurately.

• Counting and probability — systematic listing, complementary counting, simple combinations
• Number theory — divisibility, remainders, factors, digit puzzles
• Geometry — area and perimeter, angles, similar figures, coordinates
• Algebra and pre-algebra — ratios, percentages, rates, linear relationships
• Logic and reading — multi-step word problems where the difficulty is in the setup

The awards, and what they honestly mean

The MAA recognises the Distinguished Honor Roll (top 1% nationally), the Honor Roll (top 5%), and an Achievement Roll for students in Grade 6 or below who score 15 or more. These cutoffs are percentile-based and are set after the contest from the national score distribution, so nobody can tell you in advance what number is needed. In recent years the Distinguished Honor Roll has landed around 21 to 24 and the Honor Roll around 17 to 21, but treat those as context, not a promise.

We will not tell you a specific score is guaranteed. What we will do is show you, after each mock, exactly where the marks are being lost.

Why most AMC 8 preparation stalls

The usual approach is to hand a student a stack of past papers and mark them out of 25. That produces a score, and a score alone tells you nothing about what to do on Monday morning. A student who scores 16 because they cannot count systematically needs an entirely different week from a student who scores 16 because they rushed the first five questions and misread two.

Research on competition mathematics is consistent on this point: at this level, most lost marks are not lost to hard mathematics. They are lost to careless arithmetic on easy questions, to misreading the setup, and to spending eight minutes on a question that should have been left. A wrong answer on question 3 costs exactly as much as a wrong answer on question 23.

What we do differently: every miss is classified

After each mock, every wrong or blank answer is sorted into one of five causes, and the next week is planned from the result:

1. Concept gap — the technique was genuinely not known. This is the only category that needs new teaching.
2. Careless slip — the method was right and the arithmetic was not. Fixed by checking habits, not by more theory.
3. Slow method — the answer was correct but took three times too long, which cost marks elsewhere on the paper.
4. Misread — the question was answered accurately, but it was not the question that was asked.
5. Poor selection — time was spent on a question that should have been skipped and returned to.

Most students discover that only a minority of their lost marks are concept gaps. That changes what the next month should look like, and it is the single fastest way we know to move an AMC 8 score.

Where the AMC 8 leads

The AMC 8 is the foundation of the American Mathematics Competitions pathway. A strong result gives a middle-school student a genuine early signal, and — more usefully — it builds the habits that decide the AMC 10 two years later, where the AIME qualification is at stake. Students who start at AMC 8 rather than at AMC 10 arrive with the reading speed and accuracy already in place.

How the programme runs

Two to three live sessions a week, each one hour. The AMC 8 is a 40-minute paper, so sessions work in short timed blocks that mirror the real pacing. Sessions are scheduled around Indian, Gulf and UK evenings, and every one is recorded so a missed class is never a lost week.

You choose the format that suits the student:

• One-to-one — the whole hour is spent on this student's specific weaknesses. Suits a student with an uneven profile, or one preparing on a short timeline.
• Small group of two to six — students see how others attack the same problem, which is often how a faster method is learned. Costs the same per session.

Rs 650 per session. At two sessions a week that is about Rs 5,200 a month; at three, about Rs 7,800. You pay for the sessions you take. There is no admission fee, no material fee and no annual lock-in, which is unusual in this market — most AMC 8 programmes sell a fixed cohort of eight to sixteen classes for a single upfront payment of well over Rs 50,000.

Registration is separate from tuition

The MAA does not register individual students. Entry runs through a school or an approved test centre with a competition manager. If the student's school does not offer the AMC 8, we will help find a centre that does — this catches out a large number of well-prepared students every year, and it is worth sorting out months before the deadline rather than in the final week.
