AMC Score Calculator
Work out your AMC 8, AMC 10 or AMC 12 score and your AIME index. Enter how many you got right, wrong and left blank — the calculator applies the real marking scheme, including the 1.5 points a blank earns on the AMC 10 and 12.
How the AMC is scored
| Exam | Correct | Wrong | Blank | Questions | Max |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| AMC 10 / AMC 12 | +6 | 0 | +1.5 | 25 | 150 |
| AMC 8 | +1 | 0 | 0 | 25 | 25 |
The blank is worth more than a guess
This is the rule that decides more AMC 10 and AMC 12 results than any piece of mathematics on the paper. A blank scores 1.5. A blind guess among five options scores 6 one time in five, which averages 1.2. So a random guess is worth less than the blank you already had.
| Situation | Expected value | Better than a blank? |
|---|---|---|
| Guess from 5 options | 1.2 | No — leave it blank |
| Eliminate 1, guess from 4 | 1.5 | Break-even |
| Eliminate 2, guess from 3 | 2.0 | Yes — guess |
| Eliminate 3, guess from 2 | 3.0 | Yes — definitely guess |
The working rule: guess only once you can rule out at least two options. On the AMC 8 the opposite holds — a blank scores nothing there, so every question should be answered.
What score qualifies for the AIME
The AMC 10 and AMC 12 qualification threshold is a fixed 100 points. Fourteen correct answers and eleven blanks scores 100.5 and clears it. You do not have to solve the hard end of the paper — you need near-perfect accuracy on the front of it and the discipline to stop.
If you have already sat the AIME, your index is the AMC score plus ten times your AIME correct count. That index, not the raw AMC score, is what USAMO and USAJMO qualification uses.
Practise with the real marking
Knowing the arithmetic is not the same as executing it with a clock running. Our practice papers apply this exact scheme and mark instantly, so you can see what your guessing threshold actually costs you.
