January – February: The Application Set
The problem set is released. Expect 10-15 brutal proof problems. LaTeX your solutions. No shortcuts, no looking up answers. Document your struggle.
March: Essays & Recommendations
Write essays showing genuine intellectual curiosity, not achievement lists. Recommendations must highlight resilience and independent thought.
April: Admissions Decisions
Acceptances are announced. Need-based financial aid is available to ensure no admitted student is turned away.
PROMYS India Preparation Strategy
- Learn LaTeX: Handwritten proofs are accepted, but typeset solutions signal extreme seriousness and are far easier for graders to read. Learn Overleaf immediately.
- Book Zero: Read "Mathematical Proofs: A Transition to Advanced Mathematics" by Chartrand. It is the gold standard for bridging the gap from Indian computation to global proof-writing.
- Do Not Collaborate: PROMYS explicitly forbids collaboration on the application set unless stated. Graders can instantly spot disjointed logic or copied solutions from AoPS.
- Embrace the Struggle: You will stare at a single problem for 5 days. That is the point. If you look up the answer, you have failed the application. They want to see your failed approaches.
