National Mathematics Summer School (NMSS): The 1969 Legacy
NMSS is a two-week residential program held every January at ANU for approximately 75 students who have completed Year 11. Founded in 1969 by Professor A.L. (Larry) Blakers of the University of Western Australia, it is the oldest summer school of its kind in Australia and has been attended by over 3,500 students from every state and territory. Australian Science Olympiads (ASO): From Classroom to World Stage

The ASO Selection Pipeline: Three Stages to the Blazer Ceremony
Stage 1 — ASO Exam (July)
Students sit a challenging 2-hour online exam at their school in one or more disciplines. Cost is $22 per exam. Over 7,000 students participate nationally. Exams are held under strict supervision.
Stage 2 — ASO Summer School (January)
The top 24 eligible students per discipline (96 total) are invited to a two-week residential program at ANU. This is accelerated, hands-on learning equivalent to first-year university depth—lectures, tutorials, and practicals.
Stage 3 — International Team Selection
Following further residential training (April for Biology/Chemistry/Physics; July for Earth Science), teams are announced at the Blazer Ceremony at Australian Parliament House. Physics sends 5 students; Biology, Chemistry, and Earth Science send 4 each.
