AP Physics C 2027: Exam Dates and Format Changes

Mechanics on 3 May, E&M on 5 May, and a revised paper structure that makes older preparation books wrong about the timing.

R Rohan Kumar Singh Founder & Lead Mentor, IIT Madras alumnus 5 min read

The AP Physics C 2027 examinations fall on two separate days: Mechanics on Monday 3 May 2027 and Electricity and Magnetism on Wednesday 5 May 2027. The Mechanics paper also changes format this year, the first structural revision in several cycles. If you are preparing from a book printed before 2026, the timing it describes is wrong.

AP Physics C 2027 dates and the format change

ExamDateSession
AP Physics C: MechanicsMonday 3 May 2027Session 1 (morning)
AP Physics C: Electricity and MagnetismWednesday 5 May 2027Session 2 (afternoon)
AP Physics 1: Algebra-BasedWednesday 5 May 2027Session 2 (afternoon)
AP Physics 2: Algebra-BasedThursday 6 May 2027Session 1 (morning)

College Board has confirmed that the number of multiple-choice questions and the section timing on the Mechanics paper change from the May 2027 administration. Reporting of the new structure gives Section I as 42 questions in 85 minutes, up from 40 in 80, and Section II as 4 free-response questions in 95 minutes, down from 100. The course content itself is unchanged; only the shape of the paper moves.

The figures for the Electricity and Magnetism paper are less settled. Some sources report the same revision applied to E&M, others still list the previous 40-question, 80-minute structure. Until College Board publishes the E&M specification explicitly, prepare for the timing in your official course description and confirm with your AP coordinator rather than trusting a secondary summary, including this one.

What the timing change actually costs you

Two more multiple-choice questions in five more minutes is slightly less time per question than before: roughly two minutes each rather than two minutes. That sounds trivial and is not, because the Physics C multiple-choice section is already the part of the paper where strong candidates lose marks to the clock rather than to physics.

The free-response change cuts in the same direction. Four questions in 95 minutes gives you under 24 minutes each, five minutes less across the paper than the old allocation. Since the free-response section is where the calculus-based reasoning lives and where partial credit is most generous, losing five minutes there is a real cost. Practise at the new timing from now rather than discovering it in May.

Mechanics and E&M are two separate examinations

This confuses more candidates than anything else about Physics C. They are two distinct exams with two scores, two fees, and now two different days. You may sit either or both. Most students take Mechanics; E&M is the smaller and more selective cohort, and a strong E&M score carries proportionate weight for engineering and physics applications.

Both assume calculus. That is the line separating Physics C from Physics 1 and 2: where the algebra-based courses ask you to apply a formula, Physics C asks you to derive it, differentiate it, or integrate across a varying quantity. A student who is comfortable with mechanics but has not yet met integration will struggle with the rotational and energy questions in ways that have nothing to do with their physics.

What each paper tests

Mechanics covers kinematics, Newton laws of motion, work and energy, systems of particles and linear momentum, rotation, oscillations, and gravitation. The hard marks concentrate in rotation and in oscillations, where the setup requires choosing the right coordinate system and the right conserved quantity before any calculation begins.

Electricity and Magnetism covers electrostatics, conductors and capacitors, electric circuits, magnetic fields, and electromagnetism. The consistently difficult territory is Gauss law applied to non-obvious symmetries, and induction problems where the flux changes for more than one reason at once. Both are failures of setup rather than of calculation, which is why repeated practice on standard configurations pays better than grinding algebra.

Why Physics C scores look generous and are not

Physics C reports a higher proportion of fives than most AP subjects, and candidates routinely misread that as the paper being easy. It is a selection effect. The cohort sitting a calculus-based physics examination in Class 11 or 12 is small and already self-selected for mathematical confidence, so the distribution reflects who turns up rather than how forgiving the marking is.

The practical consequence is that your competition is strong, and the margin between a four and a five is often a single free-response part. That is an argument for precision in the written section rather than for relaxing. Check the current calculator policy and the published score distributions on the College Board site each year, since both are revised and neither should be taken from a secondary source.

A plan from October to May

From mid-October you have roughly twenty-eight weeks. That is comfortable for one paper and workable for both if your calculus is already solid. Spend October to January on content, following your course sequence but solving past free-response questions topic by topic as you go rather than saving them for the end. Use February and March for full timed sections at the new 2027 timing. Reserve April for complete past papers and error review, finishing a fortnight before the exam so the last two weeks are consolidation rather than new work.

The single highest-return activity is working official released free-response questions with the published scoring guidelines beside you. College Board has released decades of them. Marking your own script against the official rubric teaches you what earns a point, which is frequently not what a student assumes: a correct final number with no stated reasoning often scores less than an incomplete argument with clear physics.

Our AP Physics C tutoring covers both Mechanics and Electricity and Magnetism with the calculus treated properly rather than assumed, and AP Physics 1 tutoring covers the algebra-based paper on 5 May. For students considering the olympiad route alongside AP, our F=ma exam 2027 guide explains that pathway and its very different demands.

What to do this week

Confirm with your AP coordinator which papers you are registered for and on which dates, because Mechanics and E&M now sit on different days and a scheduling assumption from last year will be wrong. Download the most recent official free-response questions and scoring guidelines for each paper you are taking. Then sit one timed section at the 2027 timing, not the old one, and let that tell you where the twenty-eight weeks should go.

Questions people ask

When are the AP Physics C 2027 exams?

AP Physics C: Mechanics is on Monday 3 May 2027 in Session 1, and AP Physics C: Electricity and Magnetism is on Wednesday 5 May 2027 in Session 2. They are on separate days, unlike some previous years. Your AP coordinator confirms exact start times.

What is changing about the AP Physics C exam in 2027?

College Board has confirmed that the number of multiple-choice questions and the section timing change for Mechanics from the May 2027 administration. Reporting gives Section I as 42 questions in 85 minutes and Section II as 4 free-response questions in 95 minutes. Course content is unchanged.

Are AP Physics C Mechanics and E&M separate exams?

Yes. They are two distinct examinations with separate scores and separate fees, and in 2027 they fall on different days. You can register for either one or both.

Do I need calculus for AP Physics C?

Yes. Both papers are calculus-based, which is what separates them from AP Physics 1 and 2. You will need differentiation and integration for rotational dynamics, varying forces, and flux problems, so calculus should be running alongside or ahead of the physics.

How should I prepare for the AP Physics C free-response section?

Work official released free-response questions with the published scoring guidelines beside you and mark your own script. This teaches you what actually earns points, which is often clear reasoning rather than a correct final number.

When is AP Physics 1 in 2027?

AP Physics 1: Algebra-Based is on Wednesday 5 May 2027 in Session 2, the same afternoon as Physics C: Electricity and Magnetism. AP Physics 2 is the following day, Thursday 6 May, in Session 1.
