AP Physics 1 2027: Exam Date and Written Reasoning
The paper is on 5 May and it is a writing test as much as a physics test. Why algebra-based does not mean easier.
The AP Physics 1 2027 examination is on Wednesday 5 May 2027 in the afternoon session. It is algebra-based, which students consistently read as easier than it is. The paper does not test whether you can substitute numbers into a formula. It tests whether you can explain, in writing, why a physical situation behaves as it does, and that is a different skill from anything most school physics courses assess.
AP Physics 1 2027: the date and the subject landscape
| Exam | Date | Session | Mathematics |
|---|---|---|---|
| AP Physics C: Mechanics | Monday 3 May 2027 | Session 1 | Calculus |
| AP Physics 1: Algebra-Based | Wednesday 5 May 2027 | Session 2 | Algebra |
| AP Physics C: Electricity and Magnetism | Wednesday 5 May 2027 | Session 2 | Calculus |
| AP Physics 2: Algebra-Based | Thursday 6 May 2027 | Session 1 | Algebra |
Note that Physics 1 and Physics C: Electricity and Magnetism are both in Session 2 on 5 May. If you intended to sit both, speak to your AP coordinator now rather than in April, because a conflict on the same session requires arrangement in advance.
Why algebra-based does not mean easier
Physics C candidates get to hide behind mathematics. A Physics C question can be answered by setting up an integral correctly, and the physics is embedded in the setup. Physics 1 removes that shelter. With the calculus taken away, what remains is conceptual reasoning, and the examination leans hard into it: you are asked to predict what happens, to justify the prediction, and frequently to explain why a plausible alternative answer is wrong.
This is why strong mathematics students sometimes underperform here. The habit of reaching for an equation first is actively unhelpful on a paper that asks you to reason about proportionality, about what stays constant, and about what a graph is telling you before any number enters.
The free-response section is a writing test
The question types that cost the most marks are the ones requiring extended written argument. You will be asked to describe an experimental procedure, to justify a claim with reference to a physical principle, or to compare two scenarios and explain the difference. Answers that present a correct equation and a correct number, with no stated reasoning, score poorly.
The structure that earns marks is consistent: state the principle you are applying, state why it applies to this situation, then carry out the reasoning, then state the conclusion in terms of the original question. Four sentences, in that order, will usually outscore a page of algebra. Students who practise this structure deliberately improve faster than students who simply do more problems.
Experimental design questions deserve specific practice. They ask what you would measure, with what instrument, how you would vary the independent variable, and how you would analyse the resulting data, usually including what you would graph and what the gradient would represent. That last part is the most commonly omitted and the most reliably awarded.
What the course actually covers
Kinematics, dynamics with the laws of motion, circular motion and gravitation, energy, momentum, simple harmonic motion, torque and rotational motion, and in recent frameworks fluids. Rotation is where the conceptual difficulty concentrates, because angular quantities are less intuitive and because students try to memorise rotational analogues rather than understanding why they are analogous.
The topics most likely to appear in extended written form are energy and momentum, where conservation arguments give examiners natural material for "explain why" questions. If you are allocating revision time unevenly, weight it towards being able to talk clearly about conservation.
Why this paper has a reputation for low scores
AP Physics 1 has historically reported one of the lower proportions of top grades across the AP catalogue, and the reason is structural rather than mysterious. It is frequently taken as a first physics course, often in Class 10 or 11, by a broad cohort rather than a self-selected one, and it demands a kind of written argument that students have rarely been asked for before.
That should be read as information rather than discouragement. The marks are not withheld arbitrarily: they go to candidates who explain themselves. A student who practises written justification from October is competing against a large group who will not, which is a more favourable position than the headline statistics suggest. Check the current published score distribution on the College Board site rather than relying on figures quoted second-hand.
A plan from October to May
From mid-October there are about twenty-eight weeks to the paper. October to January should be content, but with written justification practised alongside each topic rather than left until the end. Take any problem you solve numerically and write a two-sentence explanation of the result; it costs a minute and builds exactly the muscle the examination rewards.
February and March belong to past free-response questions, marked against the official scoring guidelines, which College Board publishes alongside every released paper. April is full timed papers and error review. In the final fortnight, stop learning new material and instead re-read your own marked answers, because the pattern of your own losses is more informative than any revision guide.
Our AP Physics 1 tutoring teaches the written reasoning explicitly rather than assuming it, and AP Physics C tutoring covers the calculus-based papers on 3 and 5 May. Students interested in the competitive route alongside their AP should read our F=ma exam 2027 guide, which covers a paper with very different demands, and the AP Physics C 2027 format changes if you are taking both.
What to do this week
Check whether you are registered for anything else in Session 2 on 5 May, because Physics 1 and Physics C: Electricity and Magnetism share that slot. Then download one released free-response question with its scoring guidelines, answer it in full, and mark yourself honestly against the rubric. Most students discover their physics is better than their writing, which is encouraging: it is the faster of the two to fix.

Questions people ask
When is the AP Physics 1 2027 exam?
Wednesday 5 May 2027, in Session 2, which is the afternoon. AP Physics C: Electricity and Magnetism is in the same session, so students intending to take both should speak to their AP coordinator well in advance.
Is AP Physics 1 easier than AP Physics C?
Not in the way students expect. Physics C requires calculus but allows the mathematics to carry the physics. Physics 1 removes that, leaving conceptual reasoning and written justification, which many strong mathematics students find harder than integration.
How should I answer AP Physics 1 free-response questions?
State the physical principle you are applying, explain why it applies to this situation, carry out the reasoning, then answer the question as asked. Four clear sentences in that order typically outscore a page of algebra with no explanation.
What is tested in AP Physics 1 experimental design questions?
What you would measure and with what instrument, how you would vary the independent variable, and how you would analyse the data, including what to graph and what the gradient represents. The graph analysis is the most frequently omitted and most reliably awarded part.
What topics does AP Physics 1 cover?
Kinematics, dynamics, circular motion and gravitation, energy, momentum, simple harmonic motion, torque and rotational motion, and fluids in recent frameworks. Rotation is the most conceptually demanding section for most candidates.
Can I take AP Physics 1 and AP Physics C in the same year?
Yes, and many students do, but check the schedule carefully. In 2027 Physics 1 and Physics C: Electricity and Magnetism are both in Session 2 on 5 May, which requires an arrangement with your AP coordinator made in advance.
