AMC 10 Preparation 2027: A Complete Guide for Students
What the AMC 10 actually tests, why the scoring rewards leaving questions blank, and a realistic preparation plan for the 2027 cycle.
If your child is working towards the AMC 10 preparation cycle for 2027, the single most useful thing to understand early is that this is not a harder version of a school mathematics paper. It is a different kind of examination, with a syllabus that stops where school mathematics gets going and a scoring rule that punishes a habit most students have been taught.
What the paper actually is
The AMC 10 is 25 questions in 75 minutes, multiple choice, with five options per question and no calculator. It is run by the Mathematical Association of America and is open to students in Grade 10 and below, which in the Indian system means Class 10 and below. A strong Class 8 student may sit it early, and many do.
Three minutes per question sounds generous. It is not, because the last five or six questions are designed to be unreasonable at that pace, and a student who works through the paper in order will meet them with four minutes left.
The scoring rule that changes everything
This is the part that surprises families, and it is worth stating plainly.
A correct answer is worth 6 points. An unanswered question is worth 1.5. A wrong answer is worth nothing.
Work through what that means. A blind guess among five options is right one time in five, so it is worth about 1.2 points on average. Leaving the question untouched is worth 1.5. On a question you genuinely cannot start, a blank beats a guess.
Once you can eliminate even one option the arithmetic flips and guessing becomes correct. But a student who has spent years being told to never leave a blank will fill in every box, and lose points for doing it. We teach this in the first week, because it is free marks and it costs nothing to learn.
The syllabus is narrow on purpose
The AMC 10 covers elementary algebra, counting and probability, number theory, and plane geometry. It deliberately excludes calculus and most trigonometry.
Parents often assume that a child who is ahead in school mathematics will do well here. That is frequently wrong, and the reason is instructive: school rewards moving forward through a syllabus, while the AMC rewards going deeper into a fixed one. A student who has started calculus but cannot count arrangements systematically will struggle on this paper, and a student who has never seen calculus but has worked a thousand counting problems will do well.
So AMC 10 preparation is not about getting ahead. It is about depth in four areas.
Algebra
Factorisation, quadratics, systems, inequalities, sequences and the manipulation that has to be automatic rather than merely correct. At three minutes a question, a student who hesitates over a sign has already lost.
Counting and probability
This is where most students lose the most marks, and it is the area school teaching covers worst. Systematic counting, complementary counting, the pigeonhole principle, and the idea of a bijection — counting one thing by counting something easier that matches it exactly. Our combinatorics course exists largely because this single area decides so many AMC scores.
Number theory
Divisibility, modular arithmetic as a working tool rather than a definition, primes, and digit problems. A student who thinks of "mod n" only as a remainder can compute but cannot reason, and the AMC asks them to reason.
Geometry
Triangles, circles, similar figures, areas and coordinate methods. The recurring skill is drawing the figure accurately enough that it tells you something, then marking what is known before hunting for what is asked.
A realistic plan for the 2027 cycle
For a student starting from solid school mathematics, serious AMC 10 preparation needs six to nine months of consistent weekly work. Here is how we structure it.
Months 1 to 3 rebuild the four topic areas to competition depth. No timed papers yet. The aim is that no technique is unfamiliar, so that later the difficulty is the problem rather than the method.
Months 4 to 6 move to mixed problem sets and past papers section by section. This is where students learn the shape of the paper: that questions 1 to 10 should be quick, 11 to 20 are the real contest, and 21 to 25 are a separate event.
Months 7 onwards are full papers under exact timing, with the scoring rule applied honestly. A student should know, before they walk in, roughly how many questions they expect to attempt and where they intend to stop.
Why the AMC 10 matters: the AIME
The AMC 10 is not the destination. A sufficiently high score qualifies a student for the AIME, a three-hour paper of fifteen questions with integer answers from 000 to 999, and that is where the pathway genuinely opens up.
The qualifying threshold is set each year by the MAA and moves, so we do not publish a target number — any page quoting a fixed cut-off is quoting one particular year. What is stable is the implication: preparation that aims only at a respectable AMC score is aiming too low for a student who wants the pathway. Aim at qualification and the AMC score follows.
Where this fits with everything else
For students in India, the AMC pathway runs in parallel with IOQM, RMO and INMO rather than competing with it. The topics overlap almost entirely; what differs is format, since the Indian olympiad asks for written proof while the AMC asks for a lettered answer.
In practice students who combine AMC 10 preparation with the Indian pathway do better at each. The AMC trains speed and accuracy under time; the Indian pathway trains the sustained argument that the AMC never asks for. A student who can do both is in a considerably stronger position than one who can do either.
Students a year or two younger should look at AMC 8 preparation first, and students in Class 11 and 12 at the AMC 12, which shares the AMC 10's philosophy with a wider syllabus.
What good preparation looks like week to week
Week-to-week AMC 10 preparation looks unremarkable, and families should know that in advance. A student works a set of problems, gets some wrong, and finds out why. Progress is not visible week to week, and a student who expects it to be often concludes too early that they are not suited to this.
What changes across a year is the response to an unfamiliar problem. At the start, a student reads a hard problem, recognises nothing and stops. By the end, they read the same problem, still recognise nothing, and start anyway — a small case, a diagram, a list of what is given. That shift is the real outcome, and it is worth more than any single score.
Dates, registration and the AIME qualifying threshold for 2027 are set by the MAA and change between cycles. Confirm them at maa.org and with your school before planning around them.
Questions people ask
What is the AMC 10 and who can take it?
The AMC 10 is a 25-question, 75-minute multiple-choice competition run by the Mathematical Association of America, open to students in Grade 10 and below who are under a stated age limit. In Indian terms that is Class 10 and below. It is the entry point to the American olympiad pathway, and a strong score qualifies a student for the AIME.
How is the AMC 10 scored?
Correct answers earn 6 points, an unanswered question earns 1.5, and a wrong answer earns nothing. That single rule changes how the paper should be sat: a blind guess among five options is worth 1.2 points on average, which is less than the 1.5 you keep by leaving it alone. Guessing only becomes worthwhile once you can eliminate at least one option.
What topics does the AMC 10 cover?
Elementary algebra, counting and probability, number theory, and plane geometry, worked to competition depth. It deliberately excludes calculus and most trigonometry. That is why a student who is ahead in school mathematics is not automatically good at the AMC 10: the paper rewards depth in a narrow syllabus rather than coverage of a wide one.
How long does preparation take?
For a student who is comfortable with school algebra and geometry, a serious attempt needs six to nine months of consistent weekly problem solving. Students aiming at AIME qualification usually work for longer than one cycle. Nobody gets there by reading solutions; the hours have to go into attempting problems that do not yield immediately.
When is the AMC 10 held in 2027?
The MAA sets the dates each year and normally runs the AMC 10 in November, in two sittings known as A and B. Registration is arranged through a school or an approved centre, and arrangements for students outside the United States vary. Check maa.org for the current cycle rather than relying on dates reproduced on a coaching page.
