SAT 2027: Test Dates, Deadlines and Adaptive Strategy

Every confirmed spring date with its deadlines, the device-request rule nobody mentions, and why the first module decides your score.

Three SAT 2027 test dates are confirmed for the spring: 6 March, 1 May and 5 June 2027. Each has a registration deadline roughly two weeks earlier, and missing it costs you a late fee or an entire sitting. This page gives you the full calendar with every deadline, explains how the adaptive digital format actually changes your strategy, and sets out how to choose between the three dates rather than defaulting to the first one.

SAT 2027 dates and registration deadlines

Saturday 1 May 202716 April 202720 April 2027
Saturday 5 June 202721 May 202725 May 2027

All deadlines fall at 11:59 pm Eastern Time. The same dates apply to candidates inside and outside the United States, though international registration carries an additional fee. Autumn 2027 dates, likely to run from late August through early December, have not been finalised and are usually published around May. Verify everything here on the College Board SAT suite site before you register, because deadlines occasionally shift and the official calendar is the only authority.

One deadline catches people out every year and does not appear on most calendars. If you need to borrow a testing device from College Board, you must both register and submit the device request at least thirty days before test day. For the March sitting that means acting in early February, well before the registration deadline itself.

What adaptive testing actually means for your score

The digital SAT is section-adaptive, and this is the single most misunderstood feature of the test. There are two modules per section. Everyone sits the same first module. Your performance on it determines whether your second module is the harder or the easier version, and that routing decides the ceiling of your score in that section.

The consequence is counterintuitive and important: the first module matters more than the second. A candidate who treats module one casually, intending to concentrate once the test gets serious, has already capped their score before the serious part begins. Front-load your attention. Treat the first module of each section as the one that counts, because in a real sense it does.

The test runs about two hours and fourteen minutes across Reading and Writing then Maths, which is roughly an hour shorter than the old paper SAT. Each section is scored from 200 to 800 for a total out of 1600. There is no penalty for a wrong answer anywhere on the test, so unlike the AMC or the ISI objective paper, you should answer every single question. Never leave a digital SAT item blank.

Choosing between March, May and June

Most SAT 2027 candidates default to the earliest date they can manage, which is usually wrong. Work backwards from your application deadline instead, then add a retake buffer.

For a Class 11 student planning US applications in the autumn of 2027, the March sitting is the strong choice: it leaves both May and June available as retakes, and scores arrive well before applications open. For a student who needs more preparation time, May still permits a June retake. June alone is risky as a first attempt, because a disappointing score leaves you waiting until the autumn dates, which have not yet been confirmed.

The second consideration is your school calendar. The March date sits near many board examination periods in India, and the June date collides with end-of-year assessments in some systems. A sitting you walk into exhausted from another examination is worth less than one you choose for a quieter fortnight.

How much preparation a SAT 2027 score actually takes

For a student with solid school mathematics and comfortable English reading, a realistic path to a competitive score is eight to twelve weeks of structured work at five or six hours a week. The distribution matters more than the total. Roughly a third should be content review, a third timed sectional practice, and a third full adaptive mock tests with complete review afterwards.

The review is where scores actually move. After every practice section, classify each mistake: content you did not know, content you knew but misapplied, a careless error, or a timing failure. Most students find that genuine knowledge gaps are the smallest category. That is good news, because the other three are faster to fix than learning new material.

College Board publishes official adaptive practice tests through its own application, and these are the only practice material that reproduces the routing behaviour correctly. Third-party tests are useful for content drill but cannot replicate the adaptive mechanism, so your score on them means less than it appears to.

Where the marks go

In Reading and Writing, the losses cluster in questions about the function of a sentence within a passage and in command-of-evidence items, where students pick an answer that is true but does not support the specific claim asked about. In Maths, the losses are overwhelmingly in the second module when the harder routing is triggered: the content is not beyond a Class 10 syllabus, but the framing is unfamiliar and the time pressure is real.

Our digital SAT preparation classes work through the adaptive format specifically, with full-length practice under the real routing conditions. Students weighing the SAT against the ACT should read our comparison of the two tests before committing, since the enhanced ACT suits a different kind of candidate.

What to do this week

Pick your SAT 2027 date now, not in February, and put both the registration deadline and the device-request deadline in a calendar. Then sit one full official adaptive practice test this week to get an honest baseline, because every sensible plan starts from a real number rather than an assumed one. From that baseline, count the weeks to your chosen sitting and divide them into content, timed sections and full mocks in roughly equal thirds.

Questions people ask

What are the SAT 2027 test dates?

Three spring dates are confirmed: Saturday 6 March, Saturday 1 May and Saturday 5 June 2027. Autumn 2027 dates have not been finalised and are usually published around May. Check the College Board SAT suite site for the official calendar.

When are the SAT 2027 registration deadlines?

Registration closes 19 February for the March sitting, 16 April for May and 21 May for June, all at 11:59 pm Eastern Time. Late registration and change deadlines fall roughly four days after each, with an additional fee.

How does the adaptive digital SAT work?

Each section has two modules. Everyone sits the same first module, and performance on it routes you to either a harder or an easier second module. That routing sets the ceiling for your section score, which is why the first module matters more than the second.

Is there negative marking on the digital SAT?

No. There is no penalty for an incorrect answer anywhere on the test, so you should answer every question. Leaving an item blank can only cost you marks.

Which SAT date should I choose?

Work backwards from your application deadline and leave room for a retake. March is usually the strongest first attempt because both May and June remain available afterwards. June as a first attempt is risky, since the autumn dates are not yet confirmed.

How long should I prepare for the SAT?

Eight to twelve weeks at five or six hours a week is realistic for a student with solid school mathematics and comfortable English reading. Split the time roughly evenly between content review, timed sections and full adaptive mock tests with thorough review.
