AMC 12 Preparation 2027: The Route to AIME
The AMC 12 adds trigonometry, logarithms and complex numbers to the AMC 10 syllabus, and the scoring still rewards knowing when to stop.
AMC 12 preparation is often approached as AMC 10 preparation with harder questions. That framing costs students marks, because the difference is not difficulty. It is the size of the toolkit the paper assumes you already own.
Same format, wider syllabus
The AMC 12 is 25 questions in 75 minutes, multiple choice with five options, no calculator, run by the Mathematical Association of America. It is open to students in Grade 12 and below, which in the Indian system means Class 12 and below.
The format is identical to the AMC 10. The syllabus is not. AMC 12 adds trigonometry, logarithms, complex numbers and more advanced algebra, and it assumes a senior-school toolkit throughout rather than confining itself to what a middle-school student has met.
That is why a student who is strong on the AMC 10 does not automatically transfer. The problem-solving instincts carry over completely; the new content does not appear by itself.
The scoring rule, again
Unchanged from the AMC 10 and still the cheapest marks available. A correct answer is worth 6 points, an unanswered question is worth 1.5, and a wrong answer is worth nothing.
The arithmetic follows. A blind guess among five options is right one time in five, so it is worth roughly 1.2 points on average, which is less than the 1.5 a blank preserves. On a question you genuinely cannot start, leaving it alone is correct. Once you can eliminate even one option, guessing becomes correct instead.
Students who have been taught never to leave a blank will fill every box and lose points doing it. This is worth settling before the paper rather than during it.
The topics that separate AMC 12 from AMC 10
Trigonometry appears both as identities to manipulate and as a tool in geometry. A student who knows the ratios but not the identities will stall on problems that reduce to a two-line simplification.
Logarithms and exponentials turn up in equation-solving and in problems about growth and digits. The laws need to be automatic, not recalled.
Complex numbers appear in algebra and, more interestingly, in geometry. Roots of unity are a recurring source of elegant solutions to problems that look combinatorial.
Advanced algebra means polynomials beyond the basics: Vieta's formulas, symmetric functions of roots, and the structure of polynomial equations. Our algebra course covers this progression in the order it actually builds.
Everything the AMC 10 asked for still applies
The wider syllabus does not replace the core. Counting and probability, number theory and plane geometry carry just as much of the AMC 12 as they did the AMC 10, and they remain where most students lose marks.
Counting is still the weakest area for most students, because school teaches two formulas and competitions ask for arguments. Our combinatorics course exists precisely because this single area decides so many AMC scores at every level.
Number theory — divisibility, modular arithmetic, digit problems — likewise recurs constantly and rewards fluency rather than recall.
Choosing between AMC 10 and AMC 12
A Class 10 student who is eligible for both faces a genuine decision.
For most, the AMC 10 is the better choice. It is designed for that level, the syllabus is narrower so preparation is more concentrated, and qualification routes towards USAJMO.
The AMC 12 makes sense for a student who is already comfortably beyond the AMC 10 syllabus and has the senior topics secure. Taking it with shaky trigonometry and no complex numbers is a clear mistake: the extra content appears often enough to cost real marks.
A realistic plan for the 2027 cycle
For a student starting from solid senior-school mathematics, six to nine months of consistent weekly work is a reasonable frame for serious AMC 12 preparation.
The first third closes the content gap: trigonometric identities, logarithm laws, complex number arithmetic and polynomial structure, worked until they are tools rather than topics.
The middle third moves to mixed problem sets and past papers section by section. This is where a student learns the shape of the paper — that questions 1 to 10 should be quick, 11 to 20 are the real contest, and 21 to 25 are effectively a separate event.
The final third is full papers under exact timing with the scoring rule applied honestly. A student should know before they sit down roughly how many questions they expect to attempt and where they intend to stop.
The two sittings, A and B
The MAA normally offers the AMC 12 in two sittings, known as A and B, a short interval apart. Students may sit one or, where their school offers both, each of them.
Where both are available, taking both is usually worth it. The papers are different, difficulty varies slightly between them in ways nobody can predict, and the better qualifying result is what counts. A student who has one poor morning is not then finished for the year.
It also changes how the first sitting should be approached. Treated as the only chance, it invites caution; treated as the first of two, a student can attempt the harder questions more freely, which is usually where the marks that matter sit.
Where it leads
The AMC 12 is a qualifier. A sufficiently high score invites a student to the AIME, a three-hour paper of fifteen questions with integer answers from 000 to 999, and from there the strongest performers reach the USAMO.
The qualifying threshold is set each year by the MAA and moves, so we do not publish a target: any page quoting a fixed cut-off is quoting one particular year. What is stable is the implication — preparation aimed only at a respectable AMC score is aimed too low for a student who wants the pathway.
For students in India this runs in parallel with the IOQM, RMO and INMO pathway rather than against it. The topics overlap heavily; what differs is that the Indian route demands written proof while the AMC asks for a letter. Students who do both are stronger at each.
Dates, registration and the AIME threshold for 2027 are set by the MAA and change between cycles. Confirm them at maa.org and with your school.
Questions people ask
How does the AMC 12 differ from the AMC 10?
Format and scoring are identical: 25 questions, 75 minutes, multiple choice, no calculator, with points for a blank. The syllabus is wider. AMC 12 adds trigonometry, logarithms, complex numbers and more advanced algebra, and the problems assume a senior-school toolkit rather than a middle-school one.
Should a Class 10 student sit AMC 10 or AMC 12?
Usually AMC 10, because it is designed for that level and the qualification route from it leads to USAJMO. A student who is comfortably beyond the AMC 10 syllabus may take the AMC 12 instead, but the wider syllabus is a real disadvantage if the extra topics are not secure.
How does the scoring work?
A correct answer earns 6 points, an unanswered question earns 1.5, and a wrong answer earns nothing. A blind guess among five options is worth about 1.2 on average, which is less than the 1.5 a blank keeps. Guessing only becomes worthwhile once at least one option can be eliminated.
What does AIME qualification lead to?
The AIME is a three-hour paper of fifteen questions with integer answers. From there, the strongest performers are invited to the USAMO or USAJMO, which are proof-based olympiads. The AMC 12 route leads towards USAMO and the AMC 10 route towards USAJMO.
When is the AMC 12 held in 2027?
The MAA normally runs the AMC 12 in November, in two sittings known as A and B, with registration through a school or approved centre. Dates and the AIME qualifying threshold are set each year, so check maa.org for the current cycle rather than relying on a figure published elsewhere.
