AMC 10 2027: The New AIME Cutoff and Pathway Changes

A fixed score of 100 replaces the floating cutoff, AIME moves to Pearson computer testing, and the AMC score no longer counts towards USAMO.

Five things changed about the route from the AMC 10 2027 cycle through to the USA Mathematical Olympiad, and most preparation advice online still describes the old system. The qualifying score for AIME is now a fixed number you know the moment you put your pencil down. AIME itself has moved to computer-based testing at Pearson centres. There is a minimum age. And the olympiad selection no longer counts your AMC score at all. If you are planning around a percentile cutoff and a paper AIME, you are planning for a competition that no longer exists.

The five changes, and what each one means for you

AreaOld system2027 system
AIME qualificationA floating cutoff set after results, roughly the top 2.5 percentA fixed score: 100 on AMC 10, 85 on AMC 12
AIME format15 questions, one three-hour paperComputer-based: Part 1 of 8 questions in 90 minutes, Part 2 of 7 in 90 minutes, no going back
AIME venueAdministered locally through schoolsPearson Professional Centers, booked by the qualifier
Minimum ageNoneThirteen by the date of the AIME, with no alternative for younger qualifiers
USAMO selectionAn index combining AMC and AIME scoresPrimarily the AIME score; AMC no longer counts

The fixed cutoff is the change that should reshape how you prepare. Under the old system you were competing against the cohort, and the bar moved: the AMC 10A threshold has ranged from 94.5 to 105 across recent years, and the AMC 12A cutoff swung from 76.5 one November to 96 the next. You could score well and still miss because the paper was easy that year. Now the target is fixed at 100 out of 150, you know it before you start, and nobody else's performance can take it away from you.

Confirm every one of these against the official MAA competition pages before you plan around them. The association reviews its rules annually and the details here are drawn from secondary reporting of MAA announcements rather than from the source documents.

What 100 points actually requires

The AMC 10 2027 paper is 25 questions in 75 minutes. Scoring is 6 for a correct answer, 1.5 for a blank, and 0 for a wrong one. That blank-is-worth-something rule is the most under-exploited fact in the competition, and it has a precise consequence: 100 points is reachable by answering 15 questions correctly and leaving the other 10 completely blank. Fifteen correct and ten blank gives you 90 plus 15, which is 105 and clears the bar with room to spare.

Work the arithmetic the other way and it is starker. Sixteen correct, nine wrong, zero blank gives you 96 and misses. Fifteen correct with ten blanks gives you 105 and qualifies. The student who guesses on everything they cannot solve scores lower than the student who answers what they know and stops. Most candidates who fall just short of AIME do so because they filled in every bubble.

So the strategy for a AMC 10 2027 candidate targeting AIME is not to solve 20 questions. It is to solve 15 with certainty, recognise the other 10 quickly, and leave them alone. Questions 1 through 15 are where those marks live; questions 21 through 25 are designed to separate the top fraction of a percent and are, for a qualification-focused candidate, a trap.

The calendar for the 2027 cycle

The AMC 10 A and AMC 12 A were held on 5 November 2026 and the B papers on 13 November 2026, with registration having closed in October. If you are reading this after those dates, your next sitting is the November 2027 cycle, and the preparation window is the twelve months in front of you rather than a panicked autumn.

The rest of the pathway runs as follows. The AMC 8 window is 21 to 27 January 2027. The AIME is 5 and 6 February 2027, with each qualifier testing once and no make-up sitting. The USAJMO and USAMO fall on 20 and 21 March 2027. Registration for the AMC 10 and 12 opened in early September with an early-bird deadline at the end of that month, which is the pattern to expect again in 2027.

One practical consequence of Pearson administration: qualifiers receive an emailed invitation and book their own slot, and the fee is around 85 US dollars plus tax. International candidates should follow the policy of their country group leader, because the Pearson arrangement has been announced for the United States and Canada.

Preparing for a fixed target

A fixed cutoff changes the shape of good preparation for AMC 10 2027. The goal is no longer to be better than other candidates; it is to build fifteen questions worth of absolute reliability. That means depth over breadth on the standard topics: counting and probability, number theory, plane geometry, and algebraic manipulation, practised until the first fifteen questions of a paper take forty minutes rather than sixty.

The habit that produces this is timed sectional practice rather than whole papers. Sit questions 1 to 15 in forty minutes repeatedly until that is comfortable, then extend. A student who can clear the first fifteen in forty minutes has thirty-five minutes to attempt five more, which is the actual route to a score in the 120s.

Our AMC 10 preparation course runs live small-group classes built on that progression, and the AMC 12 preparation course covers the harder paper for students in Class 11 and 12. For the younger pathway, the AMC 8 course for the January 2027 window starts the same habits earlier. Students wanting the full competition map should read our AMC 10 and 12 preparation guide.

What the age rule means for young students

The thirteen-year minimum is new and it is absolute: a student who scores 100 on the AMC 10 but is twelve on the AIME date cannot sit the AIME, and no alternative has been offered. For a strong sixth or seventh grader this is worth planning around rather than discovering in February. Sitting the AMC 10 at eleven or twelve remains valuable practice, but the qualification itself cannot be used until the age condition is met.

What to do now

If the November 2026 papers have passed, the honest answer for an AMC 10 2027 candidate is that you have the best possible preparation window: a full year, which is enough to move from a score in the 70s to a reliable 100 plus. Start with a past paper under timing to find your real baseline, then work questions 1 to 15 of past papers in forty-minute blocks until that range is routine. Register in September 2027 when the window opens, and aim to walk in knowing you can clear a number that will not move.

Questions people ask

What score do you need on the AMC 10 to qualify for AIME in 2027?

A fixed 100 points out of 150 on the AMC 10, or 85 on the AMC 12. This replaces the previous floating cutoff that was set after results and typically took roughly the top 2.5 percent. Confirm the current figure on the official MAA pages before planning around it.

Is it better to guess or leave AMC 10 questions blank?

Leave them blank. A blank is worth 1.5 points and a wrong answer is worth zero. Fifteen correct with ten blanks gives 105 and qualifies, while sixteen correct with nine wrong gives 96 and does not. Most near-misses come from filling in every bubble.

When is the AIME 2027 and how is it administered?

The AIME runs on 5 and 6 February 2027, computer-based at Pearson Professional Centers, with each qualifier testing once and no make-up sitting. It is split into Part 1 of 8 questions in 90 minutes and Part 2 of 7 questions in 90 minutes, and you cannot return to Part 1.

Is there a minimum age for the AIME in 2027?

Yes. Students must be at least thirteen on the AIME date. A younger student who scores above the qualification threshold on the AMC 10 cannot sit the AIME, and no alternative has been announced.

Does the AMC score still count towards USAMO qualification?

No. USAJMO and USAMO selection for 2027 is based primarily on the AIME score, replacing the previous index that combined AMC and AIME results. More than 400 students are expected to be invited across both olympiads.

When is the next AMC 10 after November 2026?

The AMC 10 A was held on 5 November 2026 and the B paper on 13 November 2026. The next cycle is November 2027, with registration typically opening in early September and an early-bird deadline at the end of that month.
