ZIO 2027: Registration Deadline and the INOI Pathway

The exam is 21 November and registration closes 6 November. Why ZIO needs no programming, and how an INOI medal opens CMI without an entrance exam.

R Rohan Kumar Singh Founder & Lead Mentor, IIT Madras alumnus 5 min read

The most urgent date in Indian competitive programming is three weeks away. ZIO 2027 is on Saturday 21 November 2026 from 2 pm to 5 pm, and online registration closes on Friday 6 November 2026 at 9 pm IST. The fee is Rs 472. If you intend to enter the Indian Computing Olympiad this cycle, that deadline is the whole decision, because there is no late entry and the next opportunity is a year away.

ZIO 2027: the confirmed details

Exam dateSaturday 21 November 2026, 2 pm to 5 pm
Registration closesFriday 6 November 2026, 21:00 IST
FeeRs 472 (Rs 400 plus GST), paid online
PlatformComputerised test on TCS iON, at centres in 37 cities
Admit cardIssued by IARCS roughly five days before the exam
ZCO 2027Date not yet announced

One caution. The IARCS current page is internally inconsistent at the time of writing: one section gives the 6 November deadline while another says registration will open shortly. Go to the official registration link and check what it actually says before assuming either. Bulk registration for groups of ten or more is handled separately by email.

The format deserves attention because it surprises first-timers. ZIO is a written reasoning paper delivered on a computer: you work the problems on paper and type only your final answers. There is no programming in ZIO at all. That is ZCO, the separate programming round, whose date has not been published.

Two doors into the same room

The Indian Computing Olympiad runs two parallel qualifying routes and this is the structural fact most candidates misunderstand. ZIO tests algorithmic reasoning without code. ZCO tests programming. You may attempt either or both, and qualifying through either one leads to the Indian National Olympiad in Informatics.

The practical consequence is significant for a student who reasons well but has not yet built programming speed. ZIO lets you qualify on thinking alone. A Class 9 or 10 student with strong mathematics and limited coding experience is often better served attempting ZIO this year while building towards ZCO next year, rather than assuming the olympiad is closed to them until they can code fluently.

Both routes converge on INOI, which is a programming contest. So ZIO is a door, not a destination: qualifying through it means you will need working code by the time INOI arrives. Plan the programming work from the moment you register, not from the moment you qualify.

Why this pathway is worth more than it appears

An INOI medal carries weight that extends well past the contest itself. The Chennai Mathematical Institute offers direct admission, without its entrance examination, to students who win gold or silver at INOI. That is published on the CMI admissions page and is one of the least-publicised facts in Indian undergraduate admissions, because it serves nobody selling entrance coaching.

For a student who is genuinely strong at algorithms, that route is more tractable than a single three-hour mathematics paper in May. Our ISI CMI 2027 dates and timeline guide sets out the entrance route alongside the olympiad alternative, and the pathway above INOI leads through the training camp to the International Olympiad in Informatics.

Preparing for ZIO 2027 in three weeks

Three weeks is short but not useless, because ZIO rewards a specific kind of thinking rather than accumulated syllabus. The paper asks you to reason about processes: how many ways, what is the minimum cost, what state is the system in after a sequence of operations. The techniques that pay are systematic case analysis, recursion done by hand, and the discipline of constructing small examples before generalising.

Work past ZIO papers, which IARCS publishes, and work them on paper exactly as the real paper requires. Do not look at solutions until you have given a problem a genuine hour. The failure mode in three-week preparation is reading many solutions and solving few problems, which produces recognition without the ability to generate.

For ZCO and INOI, where real code is required, the language choice matters: C++ dominates for the same reason it does elsewhere in competitive programming, and our C and C++ programming course builds that foundation. The INOI preparation course covers the full ZIO, ZCO and INOI sequence, and our Indian Computing Olympiad guide explains how the rounds connect.

What a ZIO 2027 paper actually looks like

A typical ZIO 2027 problem gives you a process and asks for a count or an optimum: how many arrangements satisfy a constraint, what is the least cost to reach a configuration, how many steps before a system repeats. There is no coding, but there is structure, and the problems reward the same instincts that competitive programming rewards: find the invariant, build the recursion, check the boundary case.

Because answers are typed in rather than worked through, there is no partial credit for method. An answer is right or it is not, which makes arithmetic care unusually valuable and makes checking your work with a second small example the highest-value use of your final thirty minutes.

Eligibility and the deadline that actually matters

You must still be in school to participate. A student who has completed Class 12 is no longer eligible, which makes the final school year the last chance rather than an optional one. For students in Class 9 or 10 with ambitions, entering early is valuable even without expecting to qualify, because the paper is unlike anything school sets and familiarity is worth real marks the following year.

Students outside India following the American pathway should read our USACO 2027 guide, which covers a parallel structure with its own calendar. The algorithmic preparation overlaps almost entirely, so a student can reasonably pursue both.

What to do today

Open the IARCS registration page and establish whether registration is currently accepting entries, since the official page is ambiguous. If it is open, register now rather than on 6 November, because payment portals fail under deadline load. Download the last five ZIO papers and sit one this weekend under timing, on paper, to see what the examination actually asks. Three weeks of honest practice on past papers is worth more than three months of reading about algorithms.

Questions people ask

When is ZIO 2027 and when does registration close?

ZIO 2027 is on Saturday 21 November 2026 from 2pm to 5pm. The IARCS page gives an online registration deadline of Friday 6 November 2026 at 9pm IST, though the page is internally inconsistent, so check the official registration link directly.

Do I need to know programming for ZIO?

No. ZIO is a reasoning paper delivered on a computer: you work problems on paper and type only your final answers. Programming is tested in ZCO, which is a separate round with its own date.

What is the difference between ZIO and ZCO?

They are two parallel qualifying routes into INOI. ZIO tests algorithmic reasoning without code; ZCO tests programming. You may attempt either or both, and qualifying through either leads to the Indian National Olympiad in Informatics.

How much does ZIO 2027 cost?

Rs 472, made up of Rs 400 plus GST, paid online. The payment portal may add transaction fees depending on the method. Bulk registration for groups of ten or more is arranged separately by email with IARCS.

Does an INOI medal help with college admission?

Yes. The Chennai Mathematical Institute offers direct admission without its entrance examination to students who win gold or silver at INOI. This is published on the CMI admissions page and is rarely mentioned in coaching material.

Who is eligible for the Indian Computing Olympiad?

You must still be in school. A student who has completed Class 12 is no longer eligible, which makes the final school year the last opportunity to compete.
