The two years where IB maths starts to diverge
MYP 4 and 5, which in most schools are Class 9 and Class 10, are where mathematics separates into a standard route and an extended route. Extended covers additional and more demanding content, and the choice reaches well beyond these two years.
Standard gives all students sound basic principles. Extended supplements that with additional topics and skills, and greater breadth and depth, and is the intended foundation for DP Mathematics at Higher Level. Choosing standard does not formally bar a student from DP HL, but extended is the normal route and the practical gap is real. Schools implement the split differently, so confirm with your school which route your child is on; it is not always obvious from a report.
Still four criteria, with more at stake
Assessment remains against criteria A to D β knowing and understanding, investigating patterns, communicating, and applying mathematics in real-life contexts β but at this level the investigations are longer and the communication expectations are higher.
The pattern we see most often is a capable student plateauing here. They were carried through MYP 1 to 3 by accurate computation, which serves criterion A well. At MYP 4 and 5 a criterion B investigation needs a genuine generalisation and a justification of why the rule holds, not just the rule. Criterion D continues to be where marks are most available and least often collected, because applying mathematics to an unfamiliar context requires deciding what to use before using it, and that decision is rarely taught.
The content DP will assume
Alongside the criteria, these years must build the technique the Diploma takes for granted.
Algebra to extended standard: expanding, factorising, quadratics, simultaneous equations, indices and surds. Functions: linear, quadratic and exponential, with graphs, transformations and the function language that DP uses constantly from its first week. Geometry and trigonometry: Pythagoras, right-angled and non-right-angled trigonometry, circle geometry and three-dimensional work. Statistics and probability: representation, spread, correlation and conditional probability.
We are deliberate about this because DP Higher Level moves fast. A student who scraped through extended will find the first term of Analysis and Approaches HL unforgiving, and it is better to say so in Class 10, when there is a summer to use, than in Class 11 when there is not.
eAssessment, where your school offers it
IB offers an optional on-screen external assessment at the end of MYP 5. Schools choose whether to register for it, only MYP year 5 students may sit it, and there are separate papers for mathematics and for extended mathematics. A student pursuing the full MYP Certificate completes eight eAssessments across their subjects.
Where a school does offer it, it is worth preparing for specifically: working through mathematics on screen, with on-screen tools, is a different experience from writing on paper, and students who have only ever done the latter lose time to the interface rather than to the mathematics.
Ask your school whether your child will sit it, and tell us, because it changes the final weeks of the course.
Choosing AA or AI, two years early
The DP mathematics route is chosen in Class 10 and constrains university applications two years later. Analysis and Approaches is the more algebraic and proof-oriented course and is what mathematics-heavy degrees expect. Applications and Interpretation is modelling and technology-oriented and genuinely suits other paths.
We give an honest view based on how a student actually works rather than on how they would like to be described, because the cost of this being wrong is paid in Class 12. IB publishes a recognition guide for the two courses, and it is worth reading that alongside the entry requirements of the specific universities you have in mind, since departments differ.
One timing point for current Class 10 families: the IB is revising DP mathematics, with first teaching in August or September 2027 and first assessment in May 2029. A student starting DP in 2027 will therefore be on the new syllabus rather than the current one. Ask your school's DP coordinator which syllabus your child's cohort will follow.
Transferring in from another system
Students arriving from CBSE, IGCSE or a national curriculum usually have sound technique and are thrown by the assessment style. They have been marked for years on correct answers, and MYP marks investigation, communication and application separately.
The first few weeks with these students are mostly about showing them what is being asked for. It is rarely a mathematics problem.
How the classes run
Live online group classes, maximum eight students, grouped by MYP year and route so standard and extended students are not taught as one. Investigations are written and marked individually against the criteria, which is the only way criterion B and C improve.
What students will be able to do
- Work the right route, since MYP 4 and 5 separate standard from extended mathematics and the choice affects DP options
- Score on criteria A to D at a level where investigations and communication carry real weight
- Prepare for on-screen eAssessment where the school offers it, which is a different experience from a written paper
- Build the algebra, functions and trigonometry that DP Mathematics assumes on day one
- Decide between DP Analysis and Approaches and Applications and Interpretation with evidence behind it
- Write extended investigations that stand up to criterion B and C marking
Course structure
- Weeks 1-6: Algebra to extended standard. Expanding, factorising, quadratics, simultaneous equations, indices and surds.
- Weeks 7-12: Functions. Linear, quadratic and exponential functions, graphs, transformations and the function language DP depends on.
- Weeks 13-18: Geometry and trigonometry. Pythagoras, right-angled and non-right-angled trigonometry, circle geometry, three-dimensional work.
- Weeks 19-23: Statistics and probability. Data representation, measures of spread, correlation, and probability including conditional cases.
- Weeks 24-28: Criterion B and C in depth. Extended investigations: generalising, justifying, and writing to a standard a moderator will reward.
- Weeks 29-32: Criterion D and modelling. Applying mathematics to unfamiliar real contexts, which is where most marks are available and least often earned.
- Weeks 33-36: eAssessment practice where relevant, and the bridge into DP: the specific algebra and functions work that Analysis and Approaches assumes.
Who this is for
MYP 3 mathematics or equivalent. Students transferring from other systems are assessed first.
Students join this programme from India, United Arab Emirates, Singapore, United Kingdom and United States.
Common questions
What is the difference between standard and extended MYP maths?
In MYP 4 and 5 the mathematics runs at two levels of challenge. Standard gives all students sound basic principles; extended supplements that framework with additional topics and skills and greater breadth and depth, and is the intended foundation for students heading to DP Mathematics at Higher Level. IB-commissioned research notes that extended includes topics beyond the scope of other middle-years systems. Choosing standard does not formally bar DP HL, but extended is the normal preparation route and the practical gap is real. Confirm with your school which route your child is on.
What is eAssessment?
An optional on-screen external assessment that IB offers at the end of MYP 5. Schools choose whether to register, and only MYP year 5 students may sit it. There are separate on-screen papers for mathematics and for extended mathematics. A student pursuing the full MYP Certificate completes eight eAssessments across subjects, of which mathematics is one. Where a school does offer it, it is worth preparing for specifically, because working through mathematics on screen with on-screen tools is genuinely different from writing on paper. Ask your school whether your child will sit it.
How should we choose between DP Analysis and Approaches and Applications and Interpretation?
Begin from the university plan. Analysis and Approaches focuses on mathematical analysis through functions and calculus, with strong algebraic manipulation and proof; Applications and Interpretation is modelling, statistics and technology-oriented. The decision is made in Class 10 and constrains what a student can apply for two years later, so it deserves evidence rather than guesswork. One practical note: requirements are set per university and per department, and IB publishes a global recognition guide for the two courses that is worth reading alongside the specific universities you have in mind.
My child moved into IB from CBSE or IGCSE. What is different?
Usually the technique is fine and the assessment style is a shock. Students arriving from CBSE or IGCSE have typically been marked on getting correct answers, and MYP marks investigation, communication and application as separate, equally weighted criteria. There is also no board examination to aim at, which disorients students who have organised their whole working year around one. The first few weeks are mostly about showing them what is being asked for, because it is not what they have spent years practising.
Is MYP maths enough preparation for DP Higher Level?
The extended route is the intended preparation and is adequate for most students. But DP Higher Level is 240 teaching hours against 150 at Standard Level, and Analysis and Approaches in particular assumes real algebraic fluency from the first week. Students who scraped through extended should expect to do groundwork over the gap between MYP 5 and DP, and we would rather say that in Class 10 than in the second term of Class 11.
