Two years, one syllabus

Class 11 and Class 12 mathematics cannot sensibly be separated. Class 12 calculus rests on Class 11 functions and trigonometric identities; Class 12 probability rests on Class 11 permutations and combinations; the matrices and determinants of Class 12 assume the algebraic fluency Class 11 was supposed to build.

Students who report that Class 12 is far harder than Class 11 almost always have a Class 11 problem. They are not struggling with integration — they are struggling with the algebra and trigonometry inside the integration, which is a different complaint with a different remedy. So this course runs across both years as one piece of work.

041 or 241: a university decision, not a difficulty decision

CBSE offers two mathematics codes in Classes 11 and 12, and families sometimes choose on the basis of which looks easier. That is the wrong question.

Mathematics (041) is the traditional course: calculus-heavy and abstract, with calculus alone worth 35 of the 80 marks in the Class 12 paper. CBSE directs students who want Mathematics at university, a Mathematics Honours course, or an engineering course to take 041.

Applied Mathematics (241) was introduced as an academic elective in 2020-21. It replaces much of that calculus depth with financial mathematics, time-based data, inferential statistics and numerical applications, framed around business, economics and the social sciences. CBSE's own reasoning for creating it was that the 041 syllabus aligns well with science subjects but not with commerce or social-science degrees.

The caution that matters: if you are considering 241, confirm acceptance directly with your target universities and with the entrance-examination authority. Those bodies set their own rules, not CBSE, and they have changed over time. This is one of the most frequently mis-stated things on coaching websites, and getting it wrong costs a year.

One number, two different courses

A detail worth stating because it confuses so many families and so many websites: 241 means two different things. At Class 10 it is Mathematics-Basic. At Classes 11 and 12 it is Applied Mathematics.

They are connected — a student who passed Basic (241) may go on to Applied Mathematics (241) — but they are not the same course, and a page that treats the shared number as continuity is misleading you.

Where Class 12 marks are won and lost

Calculus is the paper. In Class 12 it is worth 35 marks out of 80 on its own — continuity and differentiability, applications of derivatives, integration and its methods, applications of integrals, differential equations. Nothing else comes close: vectors and three-dimensional geometry are 14, algebra 10, relations and functions 8, probability 8, linear programming 5. A student secure in calculus is secure overall, and a student weak in it cannot make the marks up elsewhere.

Integration is where most students lose marks, and usually not because they do not know the methods. It is because a multi-step integration gives four or five opportunities for an algebraic slip, and a student who works at speed without writing intermediate steps cannot find their own error, nor can a marker award partial credit for a line that was never written.

Vectors and three-dimensional geometry are reliably scoring once the student stops trying to visualise and starts trusting the formulas. Matrices and determinants are procedural and therefore cheap marks, provided the arithmetic is careful. Probability, including conditional probability and Bayes theorem, rewards a student who writes down what the events actually are before reaching for a formula.

The internal assessment is not an afterthought

The Class 12 result is one three-hour paper worth 80 marks plus 20 marks of internal assessment: the best two of three periodic tests worth 10, and mathematics activities worth 10.

Note that this differs from Class 10, which also carries a portfolio component. There is no portfolio at Class 12. Students routinely neglect these twenty marks and lose them for no good reason, so we plan the internal work deliberately within the course rather than leaving it to the school calendar.

Coming from Class 10 Basic

The eligibility position is not ambiguous. A student who passed only Mathematics-Basic cannot opt for Mathematics (041) at senior secondary level. CBSE says so directly. They are expressly permitted to take Applied Mathematics (241).

There is also an official route back for a family that has changed its mind: a student who has passed Basic may sit Mathematics-Standard at the Compartment examination, which restores the 041 option.

Eligibility aside, there is the separate question of whether the mathematics is within reach. We assess students coming from Basic before they join, and sometimes the honest answer is that several weeks of Class 9 and 10 groundwork are needed first. Starting Class 11 without that does not work, and saying so early is kinder than discovering it in December.

How the classes run

Live online group classes, maximum eight students, grouped by class and by code so a 041 student is not sitting through 241 material or the reverse. Written work is corrected individually and marked to the board scheme all year, which in Class 12 is where most of the value is.

In the closing weeks we run full past and sample papers under time, because managing a long paper is a separate skill from knowing the syllabus.

Who this suits

Students in Class 11 or 12 taking either mathematics code, aiming at a strong board result. Students targeting JEE should treat this as the board half of their preparation and take entrance-specific work alongside it: the overlap with JEE Main is substantial, but the question style, depth and time pressure are not the same, and a board course alone is not JEE preparation.

What students will be able to do

  • Cover Class 11 and 12 as one syllabus, since Class 12 calculus rests entirely on Class 11 functions and trigonometry
  • Choose between Mathematics 041 and Applied Mathematics 241 with the university consequences made explicit
  • Work calculus properly: limits, continuity, differentiation, integration and their applications
  • Handle the Class 11 foundations that Class 12 assumes: sets, functions, trigonometry, sequences and binomial theorem
  • Write solutions that earn method marks across a long paper, including the multi-step integration questions
  • Sit a full board paper under time, with the internal assessment component accounted for

Course structure

  1. Weeks 1-6: Class 11 foundations. Sets, relations and functions, trigonometric functions and identities, worked to the fluency Class 12 assumes.
  2. Weeks 7-12: Algebra. Complex numbers, quadratic equations, linear inequalities, permutations and combinations, binomial theorem, sequences and series.
  3. Weeks 13-17: Coordinate geometry and introductory calculus. Straight lines, conic sections, limits and derivatives.
  4. Weeks 18-23: Class 12 calculus. Continuity and differentiability, applications of derivatives, integrals and methods of integration.
  5. Weeks 24-28: Further calculus and algebra. Applications of integrals, differential equations, matrices and determinants.
  6. Weeks 29-32: Vectors, three-dimensional geometry and probability, including conditional probability and Bayes theorem.
  7. Weeks 33-36: Board preparation. Full past and sample papers under time, marked to the board scheme, with the internal assessment component planned rather than left to chance.

Who this is for

Class 10 Mathematics, ideally Standard. Students from Basic are assessed before joining and may need groundwork.

Students join this programme from India, United Arab Emirates, Singapore, Qatar and OM.

Common questions

Mathematics 041 or Applied Mathematics 241?

The decision follows the university plan, not the difficulty. Mathematics (041) is calculus-heavy and abstract, and CBSE directs students aiming at engineering or a Mathematics Honours degree to take it. Applied Mathematics (241) replaces much of that depth with financial mathematics, time-based data, inferential statistics and numerical applications, framed around commerce, economics and the social sciences, because CBSE judged that the 041 syllabus does not align well with commerce or social-science degrees. If you are considering 241, confirm acceptance directly with your target universities and with the entrance-exam authority before choosing, since those bodies set their own rules and have changed them over time.

My child took Class 10 Basic. Can they take maths in Class 11?

Not Mathematics (041). CBSE states that a student who passed only Mathematics-Basic is not eligible to opt for 041 at senior secondary level. They are expressly allowed to take Applied Mathematics (241). There is also an official route back: a student who has passed Basic may sit Mathematics-Standard at the Compartment examination and thereby recover the 041 option. Separately from eligibility, we assess students coming from Basic before they join, because the honest answer is sometimes that several weeks of Class 9 and 10 groundwork are needed first.

Why is Class 12 so much harder than Class 11?

Partly because calculus alone is 35 of the 80 marks in the Class 12 paper, so a weakness there is not recoverable elsewhere. But students who find the jump severe usually have a Class 11 problem: Class 12 calculus rests on Class 11 functions, trigonometric identities and algebra, and a student shaky on those is not struggling with integration, they are struggling with the algebra inside it. This is why we teach the two years as one syllabus rather than starting fresh in Class 12.

How is the Class 12 result made up?

One three-hour paper worth 80 marks, plus 20 marks of internal assessment. At Class 12 the internal 20 is the best two of three periodic tests worth 10, and mathematics activities worth 10. Note this differs from Class 10, which also has a portfolio component; there is no portfolio at Class 12. We plan the internal component deliberately rather than treating it as an afterthought, because these are straightforward marks that students lose through neglect.

Does this also prepare for JEE?

It covers the board syllabus thoroughly, and the overlap with JEE Main is substantial, but a board course is not a JEE course: the question style, the time pressure and the depth are different. Students targeting JEE should treat this as the board half of their preparation and take entrance-specific work alongside it.

Is 241 the same code as Class 10 Basic?

The number is the same and the courses are not, which trips up a great many websites. At Class 10, 241 is Mathematics-Basic. At Classes 11 and 12, 241 is Applied Mathematics, an academic elective introduced in 2020-21. A student who passed Basic (241) in Class 10 may go on to Applied Mathematics (241) in Class 11, but they are different courses that happen to share a number.

How large are the groups?

A maximum of eight, grouped by class and by code. Written work is corrected individually, and in Class 12 that correction is most of the value.
